CONGRESS TODAY (4/9):

SENATE
The Senate began debate on the Murkowski substitute amendment to S. 104, the
Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1997 (the substitute includes the Wyden amendment
which prohibits designating an interim storage site at Hanford, Washington).
There was agreement to not have a cloture vote on the motion to proceed to the
bill.
  [SAP sent, 4/7: The President would veto the bill. A package of letters from
DOE,   EPA, and CEQ outlining Administration concerns were sent to the Hill
Wednesday morning.)

HOUSE
Passed (213-196) H.Res. 107, Providing for Consideration of Motions to Suspend
the Rules

Passed (voice vote) under suspension of the Rule, H.R. 240, VeteransD,

Continue debate and possible vote on the Murkowski substitute amendment to S.
104, the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1997 on Thursday.  They will try to seek
an agreement on consideration of other amendments. A vote on final passage is
unlikely this week, but possible early next week.

The week of March 17th, Senator Lott announced that the Senate could also

US ratification).    If passed, implementation legislation will follow.
